Avalon on Catalina Island

Avalon on Catalina Island

Avalon on Catalina Island is one of my favorite spots to visit in Southern California. There is no shortage of things to do on this beautiful island and it is easier to get to than you might think. You will find that getting to Avalon on Catalina Island only takes about an hour to get to by boat and can be accessed from Longbeach, San Pedro, Dana Point, and Newport Beach (Which is where I departed from). Avalon on Catalina has things to do for all ages and can cater to a family vacation, bachelorette/bachelor party, and of course a romantic getaway for you lovely couples. Traveling to this amazing Island is a must do if you are in the Southern California area.

How to get to Avalon

This map will show you exactly where you can find Avalon on a map, but chances are, you won’t be swimming or taking your own boat to Catalina Island. (If you are, then good on you!) Otherwise, most people will be taking a ferry to the island. Like I stated above, fairies depart from multiple cities on the mainland, including Longbeach, San Pedro, Newport Beach, and Dana Point. All of the ferries take about an hour to reach Avalon on Catalina Island and are about $70 dollars for a round trip. My suggestion is to download Groupon and search for a discounted trip, which most likely there will be. I paid $43 dollars round trip. There should be plenty of parking areas where you can leave your car all day or even a couple nights nearby where the ferry departs as this is a common trip. Once you arrive in Avalon you will be stunned by its beauty instantly. For you fancy travelers there is a helicopter ride that will take you to the mainland and it’s actually not too pricey. Costing you about $135 each way, which for a helicopter ride, isn’t too bad in my opinion.

Here is a Garibaldi that saw once stepping off the fairy. The California State fish.

What to expect in Avalon on Catalina Island

Expect the ferry to leave either in the morning around 9 am and the evenings around 4 pm twice a day. ( There may be some exceptions so be sure to check on the day/days you would like to visit Avalon on Catalina Island.

One of the most popular things to do in Avalon is to rent something to enjoy out in the beautiful harbor. You can rent anything from a motorboat to snorkeling gear and the spot to rent it is on the pier right in the heart of Avalon. If you walk past a couple of shops you will find, “Joe’s rent-a-bout

If you have any questions about activities or tours on the Island you can find a stand inland a couple of blocks from the pier that will help you out!

My favorite spot to snorkel in Avalon on Catalina Island was in Lovers Cove, it is a beautiful little cove just a short walk from the Avalon city center. Lovers Cove is home to the best snorkeling in Avalon and you won’t believe how much fish you will see while you are there. Snorkeling equipment will be available for purchase on the main pier.

If you are in search of a place to watch the sunset, the best place in Avalon will be Buena Vista Point.

The best place to view the sunrise will be at the Chime Tower on the opposite end. They are both a bit of a hike but well worth the view of Avalon on Catalina Island.

In Avalon, you will find countless things to do from hikes and zip lining to minigolf and paddleboarding. You won’t run out of fun things to do and I recommend staying a night or two so you can fit in as much fun as possible. However, if you are short on time this can easily be a destination you visit for the day.

Once I’m in Avalon, what do I eat!?

Once you arrive in Avalon on Catalina Island you will find that there are many places to eat and/or grab a drink. Here is a list of some of my favorites.

Avalon on catalina

Luau Larry’s, a well-known spot in Avalon and is a must stop. Grab a drink, get an appetizer, or have a meal. This place is great and offers a great nightlife scene well.

El Galleon, another great spot on the island! I would recommend getting a meal here as they have almost everything and great drinks. Another great part of this place is that it is massive and they have Karaoke at night, one of my favorite activities.

Original Antonio’s Pizzeria, if you are hungry and are craving some authentic Italian food, this is the spot!

Avalon on Catalina Island

Catalina Coffee & Cookie Co., This place was open earlier than any other spot on the island. If you are an early riser like I was on this trip to Avalon on Catalina, you will want a spot to be open for some freshly brewed coffee and a begal. This is the spot!

Last, but certainly not least, is the Catalina Island Brew House. This place was my favorite spot for morning coffee and my afternoon/evening beers. They have an amazing selection of pastries, beers, and great coffee. They also have a food menu and serve some delicious pizza and sandwiches. I was at this place all three days I stayed in Avalon on Catalina Island.

That is it, guys! I hope this guide to Avalon helped to both inspire you to go there and to aid you as far as what to do while you are there. Remember to always pick up some rubbish whilst you are traveling to these beautiful locations. So many beautiful places are covered in trash and it really takes away from the beauty that nature has given us.

As always, remember that you don’t HAVE to, you GET to.
